You First by Caroline Kepnes — June 9, 2026

⚠️ This is Book 0 the You series. It is a prequel. You do not need to have watched or read the series first, but if you have — buckle up.

Genre: Psychological Thriller

If you watched the Netflix show You and spent four seasons equal parts terrified and weirdly attracted to Joe Goldberg — hi, same — this book is for you. Caroline Kepnes goes all the way back to the beginning. Seventeen-year-old Joe, working at Mr. Mooney’s bookshop in New York City, wondering who is ever going to love him. And then someone does. A missed connection on Craigslist changes everything and we get a front-row seat to the moment a lonely, damaged boy starts becoming the man we know.

Early readers are saying it adds real depth to his origin story and delivers on the darkness without losing the darkly funny edge Kepnes is known for. The unreliable narrator energy is fully intact. You are inside his head while the obsession is forming and it is exactly as disturbing as it sounds. I have read over 300 thrillers and an origin story written this close to the source material is the kind of premise that either absolutely delivers or completely misses. Everything I am hearing says it delivers.
